Edge of Doom

Even jadded New Yorkers might have done a double take on this rainy night in Times Square with a towering "Edge of Doom" sign nearby. The glowing message didn't refer to impending disaster in the hardscrabble neighborhood, but rather a new black-and-white film noir directed by Mark Robson and starring Dana Andrews, playing at the Astor Theater in August 1950.

Just up the block on the left is Times Tower, whose electronic news ticker or "zipper" provided the actual day's news, perhaps with less gloom and doom.
