Our annual “The Lives They Lived” issue of The New York Times Magazine pays tribute to some of the artists, innovators and thinkers we lost in the past year.

This year’s issue, which will be released on December 29, features world famous icons like James Earl Jones, Willie Mays, Dr. Ruth, Phil Donahue and Pete Rose; as well as those less widely known, such as Naomi Feil, who created an empathic treatment for people with advanced Alzheimers.
